Vietnam Honeymoon Itinerary: 10 Days, Beach at the Right End

A 10-day Vietnam honeymoon itinerary: Hanoi, a Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh overnight, Hoi An, and a beach finish picked by season, not habit.

Yes, Vietnam is a good honeymoon destination, with the right pacing and the right beach ending for your dates. A 10 day route that works: Hanoi for a few days, an overnight on Ha Long Bay or a quieter stop in Ninh Binh, a few days in Hoi An for the old town evenings, and a beach finish. The part people get wrong is the ending. Pick the last beach by season, not by whichever island looks best in photos, because Vietnam's coasts do not share one weather pattern.

Is Vietnam a good place to honeymoon?

Yes, if the pace matches what a honeymoon needs. In one country you get a capital city, limestone bays, old town evenings, and beaches. The caveat is the one that applies to any Vietnam trip: the country is long, and each region has its own weather and rhythm. A honeymoon that rushes through too many stops starts to feel like a tour. Pick fewer places, stay longer in each, and leave real time to do nothing.

The 10 day route

  • Days 1 to 3: Hanoi. The Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, a slow café afternoon. Hanoi is also the easiest place to shake off jet lag before the trip gets more active.
  • Days 4 to 5: Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh. An overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay gives you the limestone island scenery Vietnam is known for, with a cabin to yourselves. Ninh Binh is the quieter, closer alternative, about 100 kilometers from Hanoi, with river and karst scenery and no boat logistics.
  • Days 6 to 8: Hoi An. Fly to Da Nang, then drive to the Ancient Town, which is 50 minutes from Da Nang's airport. Lantern lit evenings, narrow streets, tailor shops, and a slower pace than anywhere else on the route. An Bang Beach is about 10 minutes away by car, so you get a coast morning without changing hotels.
  • Days 9 to 10: Beach finish. The central coast or Phu Quoc, chosen by season (see below), so the trip ends with rest instead of packing.

This is one shape, not the only one. A couple who wants less time on the water can give those days to Hoi An instead.

Where to spend more

On a honeymoon, put the money where it changes the day, not just the view. We would tell a couple to spend more on three things: a private or small boat cabin on Ha Long Bay, a pool villa or a room with real privacy in Hoi An, and a private driver for the transfer days. Then spend less on the parts that do not change much with price, like daily taxis and casual meals.

We will not give you a made up total. Costs move with season, hotel tier, and how much private transportation the route needs. Our Thailand honeymoon cost guide shows how we think about a range for a neighboring destination, and the same approach applies here: start with the stay, because it moves the total first.

When is the worst time to go to Vietnam?

There is no single worst month for the whole country. Two windows are worth planning around:

  • North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh): cold from December to March, according to the tourism board's FAQ. Pack for the route, not for "tropical," if your trip touches the north in winter.
  • Central coast (Hoi An, Da Nang): rain and storms from October to January. The board's Hoi An guide says to "expect rainy days and several storms" in that window. This is the biggest seasonal risk for a Vietnam honeymoon, because it overlaps the holidays and the new year, when many couples want to travel.

The practical rule: do not end an October to January honeymoon on the central coast. Finish on Phu Quoc instead, which the board's Phu Quoc guide says is "coolest in the dry season between October and March." If your dates are March through May, the central coast is in its best stretch and a Hoi An area finish works well. Phu Quoc is hottest in April and May, and by July its rainy season is in full swing.

Worst time to go, by region

Region Time to avoid Why
North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh) December to March Cold weather
Central coast (Hoi An, Da Nang) October to January Rainy days and storms
Phu Quoc July to September Rainy season; also hottest in April and May

FAQ

Is Vietnam a good place to honeymoon?

Yes, especially for couples who want more variety than a single island trip: a city, a limestone bay, old town evenings, and a beach finish. Keep the route realistic about how much ground Vietnam covers. Fewer places done well beats a route that tries to see the whole country in 10 days.

When is the worst time to go to Vietnam for a honeymoon?

It depends on the regions on your route. The north is cold from December through March. The central coast, including Hoi An, sees rain and storms from October through January. If you are traveling in that window, end on Phu Quoc, which is coolest and driest from October through March.

Should a Vietnam honeymoon end in Hoi An or on a beach like Phu Quoc?

It depends on when you travel. From March through May, Hoi An and the central coast beaches are in their best weather and make a strong ending. From October through January, Phu Quoc is the better finish because the central coast is in its stormy stretch.
