A day in Mae Hong Son

In town by six. First light on a lake in a pine forest, coffee from a stall on the bank, and by six you are in a town small enough to walk across for dinner. This is the day the loop slows down.
Morning
Pang Ung is a reservoir in the pine forest a short drive from Ban Rak Thai, and it is worth the early alarm: mist on the water and cold, clean air. Theo's last sunrise of the loop, and Priya's verdict on the coffee is the one we are waiting for. Then back to the cottages for breakfast and a slow checkout.
The van heads south to Mae Hong Son town. On the way, Su Tong Pae, a bamboo bridge across the rice fields to a small temple. A quiet countryside stop, twenty minutes, no crowd. Jack will ask the farmer in the field what he is growing. He always does.
Afternoon
Mae Hong Son town is the small, rural part of the trip. Fewer polished choices, quieter nights, and a lake in the middle of town with twin temples on its bank. Check in, then a massage for Sam, who has had enough of the van by now, and a walk around the lake for the rest while the monks do theirs.

Late afternoon, the hilltop temple above town, Wat Phrathat Doi Kong Mu, for the view over the valley as the light goes. Theo and Dana go up. Then down to the lake for the twin temples lit against the evening sky, which is the one everyone goes to.
Evening
In town by six. That is the rule for the whole loop in cool season, and the evenings are better for it. After a full day of curves nobody wants anything ambitious. Food within walking distance, maybe a massage, and bed.
The night market here is the local one, with carnival games alongside the food stalls. Dinner is whatever looks good, eaten on the walk. Lena wins something useless at the games and carries it for the rest of the trip.
Tomorrow is the long drive south to Chiang Mai through Khun Yuam and Mae Sariang. Lan View Coffee near Khun Yuam breaks up the stretch. It is Priya's last pour of the loop, Jack's last grower to ask a question, and the view from the terrace is the reason everyone else gets out of the van.
Where you sleep
A guesthouse, the best in town, chosen because Mae Hong Son does not have a luxury base and we would rather say so. We stayed here on our own loop. The towel elephant was waiting on our bed, and someone spent real time on it.
