Day 2 of 9 · friends trip of 6 · November

A day in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai
Guide
Private guide for the temple morning

The temple before the crowds. You will have the terrace at Doi Suthep while the city is still under haze, before the tour groups arrive. Then you walk down through the forest to a temple most visitors drive straight past.

Morning

The van is at the villa before six and the guide has you up the mountain before the gates get busy. Theo gets the light he asked for. Everyone else gets the quiet. The forest trail down to Wat Pha Lat is short, shaded, and downhill, which is the direction Priya's knee prefers.

Back in the old city by mid morning for coffee. This is Priya's stop. Chiang Mai pours single-origin Thai beans from farms a few hours north, and the shop we have in mind lets her taste three before she picks a bag to take home. Jack will want to know where the farm is and how they grow it. They will tell him.

Lunch is khao soi, the coconut curry noodle dish the north is known for. Our pick is Khao Soi Jae On in Chang Phueak, a neighborhood shop rather than a tourist one. It works for six at lunch. It would not work for six at dinner, which is the kind of thing we check. Sam does not do spice, and khao soi here is mild. There is a plain noodle soup on the menu if it is not.

We have eaten our way through more khao soi shops than we will admit to. Jae On is the one we send friends to.

Afternoon

There is no second temple after Doi Suthep. One is a memory and three is a checklist, and the afternoon belongs to the spa block.

Split the group without losing the group. Dana and Lena take the long massage. Jack and Priya take the cooking class, which starts with a walk through the market, the part Jack cares about. Sam and Theo sit by the pool. Everyone meets again for dinner. A spa block on day two is not an add-on. It is how six people still like each other on day nine.

Evening

If the day lands on a Sunday, the Walking Street runs through the old city at dusk: food stalls, crafts, and a crowd that is happy rather than pushy. Any other night, the night market covers the same ground. Dinner is near the villa, booked ahead for six, because good Chiang Mai tables are small.

If Lena wants a livelier night, the cabaret show is a fun hour and nobody loses the next morning. Theo, Priya, and Jack will be asleep by ten. That is fine. Nobody has to do the same evening.

Where you sleep

A villa with enough shared space for six, a pool, and bedrooms that work for the two couples and for Sam and Theo sharing. We match it to the group rather than name one here. Lena said she was flexible about rooms. We booked as if she was not, and she gets one of the two with pool access. Three nights, so nobody unpacks twice before the mountains.

This is one day of one trip. Tell us who is going and we will shape yours around them.
